Lacewing was commissioned by international collector Tuan Lee and completed in 2018. Like other necklaces in the Verto series, it has a flexible rubber core that allows it to mould comfortably to the body and twist into a variety of silhouettes — shifting form with the wearer’s movement or mood.
Unlike its aluminium cousins, Lacewing has no colour. Instead, the focus is on contrast: the blackened silver discs with bright polished edges, some peppered with diamonds, create a subtle but striking interplay of light and shadow.
The internal, lacy pattern was inspired by the delicate vein structure of an insect’s wing — which gave the piece its name. Its overall silhouette also echoes the floating forms of deep-sea jellyfish. (See Lacewing Video)
In 2019, Lacewing received The Goldsmiths’ Company Award from The Goldsmiths’ Craft & Design Council.
In 2021, the piece was selected for the cover of 1843 Magazine’s annual high jewellery issue, which featured an interview with me and Dolce & Gabbana. The shoot was directed by Luxury Editor Melanie Grant, who styled the piece with a futuristic aesthetic inspired by Blade Runner — a vision that echoed the sleek, otherworldly quality of the necklace.
