Vane
Anodised aluminium, silicone, brass, silver, magnets
Still life photographs by John Moore
The Vane collection evolved from the principles behind Elytra, namely the repetition of simple shapes assembled to create a larger whole, but it became its own genus.
Circular or semi circular discs of coloured, anodised aluminium were repeated along a snake chain or belt spring, separated by sections of silicone tube. Each piece had two colours, one each side of the component discs. Assembling them to face the same direction created a mesmerising, optical effect that was inspired by a parrot feather I had in my studio. The name Vane comes from the soft part of a feather. As with feathers, scales, or leaves, the repeated elements caught the light differently depending on angle and motion. The result was a series of voluminous wearable forms, as described by the bright, metal edges of the discs, that could move and twist with serpentine fluidity, thanks to the negative spaces in between. Celebrating the interplay of structure and illusion, Vane was incredibly tactile and playful as well as visually intriguing.
